Ultrasounds and Fetal Monitoring

Ultrasound and fetal monitoring

It is one thing to feel a kick. It is another to see a heartbeat, a tiny hand, or the curve of a growing spine. Pregnancy brings powerful changes, but many of them happen silently, deep within. That is where ultrasounds and electronic fetal monitoring come in. These tools allow you to witness what is invisible. They turn uncertainty into reassurance. They help you and your care team track the milestones that matter.

What are ultrasounds?

An ultrasound is a scan that uses sound waves to create images of your baby growing inside the womb. It is safe. It is non-invasive. And it tells a powerful story, one frame at a time.

You will usually have at least 4 key ultrasounds during your pregnancy:

    • Dating scan (around 8-10weeks): Confirms pregnancy, estimates your due date, and checks the location of your pregnancy.
    • Chromosomal screening scan (12-13weeks): This is the screening test for chromosomal abnormalities.
    • Anatomy scan (around 20 weeks): Assesses your baby’s structural growth and any abnormalities.
    • 36-38 weeks: Assess position of baby, placental site, and fluid around baby in preparation for delivery

However, scans are done at every visit to monitor the growth of your baby.

Some pregnancies may need additional scans to monitor specific concerns, such as changes in growth patterns or amniotic fluid levels. Dr Packirisamy will explain what each scan is for and what it shows.

You may hear your baby’s heartbeat. You may see movement. And you may leave with more clarity than you expected.

What is electronic fetal monitoring?

Electronic fetal monitoring is used to track your baby’s heart rate and your contractions. It becomes especially important later in pregnancy or during labour.

There are two main types:

  • Non-stress tests (NST): Measure your baby’s heart rate and are an indicator of your baby’s wellbeing. Usually done in the third trimester when you are not in labour.
  • Labour monitoring (Cardiotocograph): Monitors how your baby responds to contractions, helping your care team monitor the wellbeing of your baby when you are in labour.

Fetal monitoring gives real-time insights. It helps detect signs of distress, irregular heart rhythms, or other concerns that may require a follow-up. It can also offer reassurance that your baby is handling labour well.

When might I need extra monitoring?

In some cases, Dr Packirisamy may recommend more frequent ultrasounds and fetal monitoring. This does not always mean something is wrong. It simply means more information is needed.

You may need extra monitoring if:

  • You may have high blood pressure or diabetes
  • Your baby is measuring small or large
  • You are carrying multiples (twins or more)
  • You have complications from a previous pregnancy
  • You notice changes in your baby’s movements

Every pregnancy carries its own pace, its own signals. Additional scans and monitoring may simply help translate those signals into actionable steps.

What should I expect at my appointment?

For most ultrasound and monitoring appointments, you will:

  • Be asked to lie back in a comfortable position
  • Have gel applied to your belly (for ultrasound)
  • See images of your baby on a screen
  • Hear your baby’s heartbeat
  • Possibly undergo gentle abdominal monitoring with belts and sensors (for electronic fetal monitoring)

You will be guided through each step. If anything needs follow-up, it will be discussed clearly and calmly.

Why is this important?

These tools are not just about technology. They are about connection. They help track your baby’s health, prepare for your delivery, and offer reassurance when things feel uncertain.

Even a quick scan can confirm that your baby and placenta are developing well or that those sharp twinges are just part of the process.

When you leave, you are not just carrying your baby; you are carrying answers.
